Generalized plasma focus problem and its application to space propulsion

Space propulsion is unique among many proposed applications of the dense plasma focus in being critically dependent on availability a scaling theory that well-grounded physics, conformity with existing experimental knowledge and applicable to experimentally untested configurations. This paper derives such first-principles-based illustrates its application novel space concept, where sheath employed as power density amplifying mechanism transport electric energy from capacitive storage current-driven fusion load. For this purpose, Generalized Plasma Focus problem introduced formulated. It concerns finite, axisymmetric plasma, driven through neutral gas at supersonic speed over distances much larger than typical gradient scale length by azimuthal magnetic field while remaining connected pulse source suitable boundaries. The Gratton-Vargas equation rederived properties equations governing dynamics solved for algebraically defined initial (insulator) boundary (anode) surfaces. Scaling relations new concept are derived. consists modified tapered anode transports current pulsed consumable portion form hypodermic needle tube continuously extruded along axis device. When filled deuterium, device may serve small-scale version magnetized liner inertial (MAGLIF) could avoid failure neutron yield conventional focus.
